Rudi van Dantzig
biography
Few people have left such a mark on the Dutch National Ballet and the Dutch dance world as Rudi van Dantzig. He has created over fifty ballets, often in collaboration with Toer van Schayk as set and costume designer. On the occasion of his 75th birthday in 2009, the Dutch National Ballet paid tribute to their former artistic director with a programme dedicated to Van Dantzig and his work. The 9th of May the Dutch National Ballet will honor him with a special programme, te oremeber his death on the 19th of January 2012.
Writer and choreographer Rudi van Dantzig (Amsterdam, 1933-2012) started his dancing career in 1952 with Gaskell’s Ballet Recital, the forerunner of the Dutch National Ballet. Following the foundation of the Dutch National Ballet in 1961, he became the resident choreographer of the company, and from 1971 to 1994 he was the artistic director.

Van Dantzig has been awarded the Prix de la Critique 1961, the Choreography Prize from the City of Amsterdam in 1956 and 1970, the Sonia Gaskell Award 1985, the Life Time Achievement Award 2002 and the Silver Medal 2005 from the City of Amsterdam.
In 1969, Van Dantzig was proclaimed Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau and in 1991 an Officer of the same order. In Germany, he received the Verdienstkreuz am Bande in 1982.
author
Rudi van Dantzig has also become a well-known author. His debut novel For a lost soldier was published in 1986, he published a book about his memories of Rudolf Nureyev, The trail of a comet, in 1993, and the book The life of Willem Arondéus was published in 2003.
