The Spaniard Juanjo Arqués trained as a dancer at the Conservatorio de Danza in his hometown Murcia.
Before coming to the Netherlands in 2004, he worked for five years as a soloist with Ballet Victor Ullate in Madrid, and for four years in the same rank with English National Ballet. With the Dutch National Ballet, he began as a grand sujet and was promoted to second soloist three years later.
Besides being a dancer, Juanjo is also a talented choreographer. In 2010, he created Minos for the Dutch National Ballet and another new work is planned for this season, for the programme Present/s.

Juanjo has choreographed for the workshop New Moves and the programme In Space.
