'most impressive dance achievement'
No fewer than three dancers from the Dutch National Ballet, Jurgita Dronina, Matthew Golding and Anna Tsygankova, have been nominated for a ‘Zwaan’ in the category ‘most impressive dance achievement’ of 2011. The ‘Zwanen’ are the most prestigious dance awards in the Netherlands, and they will be presented on Saturday 8 October 2011 during the Dutch Dance Days in Maastricht.
Jurgita Dronina has been nominated for her role in The Sleeping Beauty, and Anna Tsygankova and Matthew Golding for their parts in Don Quichotte.
‘This season, the Russian ballerina Jurgita Dronina has seized the opportunity to shine with the Dutch National Ballet. In both The Sleeping Beauty and Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, she approaches the level of perfection. She effortlessly wins over her audience with her refined technique, youthful élan and enthusiasm’ says the jury.
‘Matthew Golding (Canada) was the dream Basilio in the Dutch National Ballet’s Don Quichotte’. The jury thought he was ‘captivating in his role as the cheeky, boyish fun-lover and impressive for the infectious bravura with which he performed his jumps and amazing pirouettes’.
According to the jury, the Siberian ballerina Anna Tsygankova exudes ‘Spanish heat and excitement as Kitri in Alexei Ratmansky's Don Quichotte. She is a true ballerina, who can carry the performance. Her excellent technique enables her to dance freely and to the full, as she also demonstrated in Serenade by George Balanchine’.
The nominees will soon be on stage in the Dutch premiere of Sylvia by the Dutch National Ballet, which will be presented in The Amsterdam Music Theatre from 17 March to 10 April 2011.
The dance awards are presented by the Dutch Association of Theatres and Concert Halls (VSCD), and have gone under the name of ‘Zwaan’ (Swan) since 2003. Each year, the ‘Zwanen’ are awarded in two categories: ‘Zwaan’ for ‘the most impressive dance achievement’ and ‘Zwaan’ for ‘the most impressive dance production’. The ‘Zwanen’ for 2011 will be awarded to dance productions and achievements taking place in the 2010-2011 season.
