The Dutch National Ballet and the National Ballet Academy (NBA) are going to combine forces. On 27 June, they signed a covenant aimed at reinforcing the ballet academy for talented and ambitious youngsters and increasing the future share of dancers trained in the Netherlands in the Dutch dance companies.
The collaboration focuses mainly on strong involvement from the Dutch National Ballet in training professional dancers, a good link between the academy and ballet practice in the Netherlands and abroad, and the maintenance and reinforcement of the quality and future position of Dutch ballet and ballet training.
The new Junior Company, starting on 1 August and comprising twelve very talented young dancers, is an important part of the covenant. The Junior Company gives young dancers two years in which to gain performance experience at the highest level. Students in the final year of the Higher Vocational Education (HBO) phase of the NBA do an internship with the Junior Company of the Dutch National Ballet. They can then move on to the second year of the Junior Company, whereby they enter employment with the Dutch National Ballet.
Another practical element of the collaboration is that students in the HBO phase take classes with guest teachers from the Dutch National Ballet and/or can take part in the company’s daily classes. The Dutch National Ballet will also be giving repertoire classes at the NBA, and from now on will be involved in the NBA auditions, and in recruiting and scouting talent.
One consequence of the intensified collaboration is the appointment of Ted Brandsen, artistic director of the Dutch National Ballet, to artistic advisor to the National Ballet Academy, and of Hans van Manen, resident choreographer with the Dutch National Ballet, to patron of the National Ballet Academy.
The covenant comes into force on 1 August 2013 and will be concluded initially for a period of three years, up to 31 July 2016.
