At the start of a new season, there are also some changes in the company line-up. The most striking change is the arrival of principal dancer Vito Mazzeo.
The Italian Vito Mazzeo joined the company on 1 August in the rank of principal. He comes from San Francisco Ballet, where he made his debut in the rank of soloist in 2010 and was promoted to principal barely six months later. Mazzeo is making his debut as a principal with the Dutch National Ballet at the Gala on Saturday 7 September 2013 in The Amsterdam Music Theatre. Vito Mazzeo: “I am excited to join the company. I have admired the Dutch National Ballet ever since I started at La Scala Ballet School. I saw the company performing in London several times and I am really looking forward to seeing how Hans van Manen (one of the most exciting choreographers) works, and how he develops his new creations. The repertoire is very varied, and what I like most are the new works by the most creative choreographers in the world, which help the dancers to grow faster and in a smarter way”.
Sem Sjouke is new to the Dutch National Ballet and is starting in the corps de ballet. He trained at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and danced previously with the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company and as an apprentice with American Ballet Theatre. He was a finalist at the Prix de Lausanne in 2011. Sem’s father is Rob Sjouke, who danced with the Dutch National Ballet from 1990 to 1996.
Tycho Hupperets, who left the company in 2011, will be returning to the Dutch National Ballet temporarily until 2 November 2013.
Milena Sidorova has been promoted to grand sujet and Qian Liu to coryphée. Hannah Grennell, Michelle Murphy, Clotilde Tran-Phat, Martina Verbeni and Remy Catalan are moving up to the corps de ballet. Floor Eimers, Chanquito van Hoeve and Skyler Martin have been promoted to the rank of élève.
Dancers who are leaving
Davit Vardanyan (corps de ballet) is leaving the company and going to dance with the Royal Ballet of Flanders. Ernst Meisner (grand sujet) has ended his active career as a dancer and is now the artistic coordinator of the Junior Company.
