50 years of the Dutch National Ballet.
The seventies and eighties were a golden age for the Dutch National Ballet, with the three ‘Vans’ – Rudi van Dantzig, Hans van Manen and Toer van Schayk.
The Dutch National Ballet is presenting three masterpieces from the oeuvre of the three ‘Vans’.
Rudi van Dantzig’s Four last songs consists of four exceptionally inspired duets, in which the former artistic director expresses the theme of accepting death. The piece has been performed all over the world, just like Hans van Manen’s Five Tangos, the second work on the programme. In a dazzling display of movement, Van Manen combined the repressed passion of tango with the cool distance of ballet. In doing so, he ensured the Dutch breakthrough of Astor Piazzolla, whose tangos nuevos are performed live in this programme by bandoneonist Carel Kraayenhof and his group Sexteto Canyengue.
The third piece danced by the company is Toer van Schayk’s De omkeerbaarheid van roest. This work deals with the clash of cultures, and is striking for its rich dance idiom and hypnotic images.
‘Four last songs comprises a rare poetry, simplicity, purity and expressiveness’
- Haarlems Dagblad
‘Inspired by five of Piazzolla’s irrepressible tunes, Hans van Manen shows us that tango can be interpreted innovatively and outside of clichéd conceptions’
- Emma Manning, editor-in-chief of Dance Europe Magazine, about 5 Tangos
‘A suggestive, intriguing work that etches succinct images on the mind’
- NRC Handelsblad about De omkeerbaarheid van roest?
