To celebrate sixty years of the Nieuw-West district of Amsterdam and the fiftieth anniversary of the Dutch National Ballet, a festive meeting will be held in De Meervaart on the theme A Thousand and One Nights.

The starting signal will be given on 22 May 2012 in Theater De Meervaart and the first introduction will be made to what will result in an extensive participation project with various dance companies in Amsterdam West. Under the title Stardust, the day will include a varied programme jointly presented by the Turkish folk dance group Tugra and the Dutch National Ballet. Peter Leung, coryphée with the Dutch National Ballet, has choreographed a new work for the Turkish dancers especially for the occasion. Tugra will also be dancing two traditional Turkish works, Halaj and Zeybek, which will have live musical accompaniment. The Dutch National Ballet is presenting a cross-section of its ballet repertoire, danced by young stars from the company. The programme will include fragments from Giselle, the ballet Solo by Hans van Manen and works by upcoming choreographic talents from within the company’s ranks: Peter Leung, Remi Wörtmeyer and Milena Sidorova.

There will be another meeting in Theater De Meervaart on Sunday 28 October.

As a universal and non-verbal art form, dance is able to transcend barriers erected between cultures, religions and social groups. So the Dutch National Ballet would like to welcome as many citizens of Amsterdam as possible to our performances, and we extend a warm invitation to everyone.

The Dutch National Ballet is not only concerned with conserving and performing existing repertoire. It is also a centre for development in dance. In the coming years, the Dutch National Ballet will be making space for experimenting and for meeting new target groups. In the past, the company has cooperated with Amsterdam organisations in producing two exciting editions of Swan Lake Bijlmermeer.

Stardust by the Dutch National Ballet and Dansgroep Tugra will be presented on Tuesday 22 May. On the same day, the Dutch National Ballet is also dancing a performance of The little big chest (4+).
