Swan Lake

Introduction

Milestone in dutch dance history.

programme

For his adaptation of this ‘ballet of ballets’, which revolves around love and deception, Rudi van Dantzig, former artistic director of the Dutch National Ballet, took his inspiration mainly from Tchaikovsky. Though Van Dantzig respected the surviving sections of the ‘standard version’ by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov from 1895, he chose for a less superficial, more human interpretation for the rest. His production therefore stands out for its emotional power of expression. The impressive sets and costumes designed by Toer van Schayk appear to have been taken from the ‘golden’ paintings of the seventeenth-century Dutch Masters.

Throughout its fifty-year existence, the company has not only performed successful foreign versions of classical ballets, but has also created its own interpretations. Based on a completely personal vision, or given a typically Dutch character, these productions have made a significant contribution to the Dutch cultural heritage.

‘Van Dantzig’s Swan Lake most beautiful up to now’ - de Volkskrant

‘This magical yet dramatic Swan Lake is a must for lovers of classical ballet and all those who could become one’ - De Telegraaf

The Dutch National Ballet’s Swan Lake is delectable

‘(...) the interpretation of Swan Lake created for the company by Rudi van Danzig in 1988 is an absolute feast for the eyes. It starts already with Toer van Schayk’s sets and costumes, which exude an overwhelming grandeur. Then there is Tchaikovsky’s music – full of rousing melodies – in a dazzling performance by Holland Symfonia (...) And then, of course, there is the interpretation of the romantic fairytale by the dancers of the Dutch National Ballet in Van Dantzig’s choreography, which is delectable’.

‘There are numerous versions of Swan Lake – a story of love that conquers evil – but Van Dantzig’s is undeniably one of the greatest and most beautiful (...) and justifiably greatly appreciated by the audience, who sat for over three hours in amazement’. (Nanska van de Laar, 19 October 2011)

High degree of homogeneity

‘After more than five and a half years, the Dutch National Ballet is presenting their beautiful production of Swan Lake again’, writes De Telegraaf. And: ‘The corps de ballet displays a high degree of homogeneity and the character dances in the third act whirl throughout The Amsterdam Music Theatre, while Toer van Schayk’s fairytale stage sets filled with romantic melancholy are a perfect match for the timeless drama of Rudi van Dantzig’s version. (...)Holland Symfonia performs Tchaikovsky’s wonderful, compelling music with fervour’. (Eddie Vetter, 19 October 2011)
