Programme

Whereas the Dutch National Ballet’s spotlight is trained on the corps de ballet in Corps, in the programme Ballerina the company is placing its female and male principals in the limelight. Six of them recently gained a place in the top 100 international dancers chosen by the leading magazine Dance Europe. Other principals from the company, too, have received an increasing number of invitations in recent years to perform at international ballet galas and to guest in productions abroad.

In Ballerina – which will only consist of four performances – you can admire these dancers in pas de deux from classical and neoclassical ballets by Marius Petipa and George Balanchine, among others. But they will also be starring in contemporary creations that have already earned the title of ‘classic’, including duets by Hans van Manen and Christopher Wheeldon. Here, the focus is not only on virtuosity, but also on the dancers’ artistic and personal interpretation of their roles.

The duets will be combined with one of the latest productions by the Dutch National Ballet: the Grand Pas Classique from Paquita, in which many other principals and soloists get a chance to shine alongside the main couple, surrounded by the corps de ballet. In this new, universally acclaimed production, Rachel Beaujean, head of the artistic staff, took a fresh look at this divertissement of pure dance from the narrative nineteenth-century ballet by Marius Petipa. Besides a cast-iron technique, the ballet – situated at the Spanish court – also demands majestic elegance. This is also expressed in the exclusive costumes and the sets inspired by the Spanish Alhambra designed by François-Noël Cherpin.

‘Just how powerful and expressive classical ballet can be is demonstrated by Paquita (...)pure dance to show off the dancers’ technical brilliance (...) a dazzling, yet controlled and stylish showcase’
