Programme

One of the Dutch National Ballet’s biggest recent successes is undoubtedly Don Quichotte. Presented in 2010, this full-length production was interpreted exclusively for the company by the leading Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. The production received acclaim as far afield as China, and the dancers of the leading roles were nominated for many major dance awards. By popular demand, the production is returning to the repertoire.

Prominent foreign companies like the Bolshoi Ballet and American Ballet Theatre have triumphed for many years with Don Quichotte, with its overtones of virtuosity, high spirits and Spanish temperament. But Ratmansky’s production – the first full-length Don Quichotte ballet to be produced in the Netherlands – is now internationally recognised as the most beautiful and well thought-out version of the ballet in existence today.

As with all Ratmansky’s productions, his Don Quichotte shows great respect for tradition. The former artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet, who is currently resident choreographer with American Ballet Theatre, based his interpretation on the libretto for the first version of the ballet created by Marius Petipa in 1869. However, he added his own elements and new choreography, and directed the whole with unbridled passion and precision. The extremely stylish and colourful sets and costumes were designed by the Frenchman Jérôme Kaplan.

With its dazzling leaps, dizzying pirouettes and crisp pointe work,  Don Quichotte gives the performers every opportunity to show off their technical prowess. But at the same time, the story based on Cervantes’ masterpiece makes strong demands on their acting abilities. The roles of Don Quichotte and Sancho Panza – previously performed splendidly by Peter de Jong and Karel de Rooy (Mini & Maxi) – will be interpreted this time by an exciting new actors’ duo.

- De Telegraaf
