In its second tour of the Netherlands, in May 2014, the Dutch National Ballet is presenting an exquisite selection of its classical repertoire.
First on the programme is The Dream, one of the best examples of the English ballet style, known for its great precision and purity, but also for its humour and stories full of wondrous fairytale characters. Choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton based his dream ballet on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which the king of the fairies Oberon and his spouse Titania try to outdo one another, which leads to all sorts of absurd intrigues.
Alongside this highlight of twentieth-century ballet, Dreams presents one of the latest productions by the Dutch National Ballet: Paquita, in which many other principals and soloists get a chance to shine alongside the main couple, surrounded by the corps de ballet. In this new, universally acclaimed production, Rachel Beaujean, head of the artistic staff, took a fresh look at this divertissement of pure dance from the narrative nineteenth-century ballet by Marius Petipa. Besides a cast-iron technique, the ballet – situated at the Spanish court – also demands majestic elegance. This is also expressed in the exclusive costumes and the sets inspired by the Spanish Alhambra designed by François-Noël Cherpin.
Musical accompaniment: Holland Symfonia, conducted by Matthew Rowe
The duration of the show is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including two intermissions
