Four leading choreographers working in the Netherlands and four world-famous Dutch artists from other disciplines.
In Dutch Doubles, the Dutch National Ballet is bringing together four leading choreographers working in the Netherlands and four world-famous Dutch artists from other disciplines. In four world premieres, harpist Remy van Kesteren, fashion designers Viktor & Rolf, photographer Rineke Dijkstra and visual artist Krijn de Koning will challenge choreographers and dancers to give of their very best.
The first premiere will be created by Hans van Manen, over 80 years old and still at the top. Recently, his Variations for two couples was nominated for a Benois de la Danse, the ‘Oscar’ of dance. In Dutch Doubles, he will be working with one of the greatest international harpists, the 23-year-old Remy van Kesteren, who already triumphed at the age of fifteen at the Carnegie Hall in New York.
New to the Dutch National Ballet is Jorma Elo, a former leading dancer with Nederlands Dans Theater and now one of the most sought-after choreographers in the world, who has created works for companies like New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and the Bolshoi Ballet. For his first creation for the Netherlands in years, Elo will be working with the most distinctive fashion duo in the country, Viktor & Rolf, who will be designing the costumes and – for the first time in their career – the sets.
Ton Simons made his debut with the Dutch National Ballet in 2012, in the programme Present/s. His clear, musical movement constructions have made him of the most interesting choreographers in the Netherlands for many years. For Dutch Doubles, he will take his inspiration from top photographer Rineke Dijkstra. The Guggenheim in New York recently held a retrospective of her portraits, which – stripped of any frills – expose a world of concealed emotions.
The youngest choreographer in Dutch Doubles is the rising star Juanjo Arqués, who has created successful works in Spain and Slovenia, alongside his extremely exciting contribution to the programme Present/s. In Dutch Doubles, he will be working with one of today’s most prominent visual artists, Krijn de Koning, known for his abstract architectural sculptures, in which colour plays an essential role.
‘If you think of a harpist, you imagine long-haired, delicately strumming nymphs. But now there is Remy van Kesteren’

‘It is the combination of abstract thought and intuitive action that makes De Koning one of the greatest contemporary artists of the Netherlands’
