In September 2013, the Dutch National Ballet is touring the Netherlands with a programme that is very varied in both style and casting. In two of the four works, the main role is played by the corps de ballet.
In Michel Fokine’s romantic Les Sylphides, to piano works by Frédéric Chopin, the magic is created mainly by the stylistic unity of the ensemble of female dancers. In Hans van Manen’s impressive Corps, to Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, however, the unity is created by the taut, measured steps of a group of men – while three women join them in passing.
Another piece by Hans van Manen on the programme is Variations for two couples, his latest work, which was recently nominated for the prestigious international Benois de la Danse Award. For this ballet, the master choreographer took the different qualities of two principal couples as his source of inspiration. The fourth work, George Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, is also a wonderful tribute to the principal dancers – in this case just one couple. It is a virtuoso yet refined gem, which offers top dancers every opportunity of displaying their star qualities.
Musical accompaniment: Holland Symfonia, conducted by Ermanno Florio
The duration of the show is approximately 3 hours, including two intermissions
