Holland Festival 2014. Freely inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
For the Holland Festival 2014, the Dutch National Ballet is presenting a new, large-scale, full-length production by resident choreographer Krzysztof Pastor, which is freely inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Pastor is collaborating on this production with the Iranian photographer and film and video artist Shirin Neshat, based in New York. Neshat is known mainly for the subtle yet revealing way in which her work exposes the isolated position of women in the Islamic world.
Pastor’s The Tempest will not be a literal representation of Shakespeare’s play. Though he will use elements and characters from the story, he is mainly concerned with the magic found in the script. The choreographer has previously taken inspiration from the work of Shirin Neshat, for his ballet Scheherazade in 2009. He sees a relationship between her way of working and dance: ‘Both of them allow you to say a lot, without shouting it from the rooftops’. For The Tempest, the music they are using will include compositions by the British composers Henry Purcell and Thomas Tallis, and traditional Iranian music.
The Tempest was performed for the first time in 1611. The title refers to the storm whipped up by Prospero, the Duke of Milan, in revenge on his brother Antonio and Alonso, the King of Naples, who banished him to an island expecting him to die at sea. For twelve years, Prospero concentrates on perfecting his magic arts on the island. Then, as a powerful director, he starts pulling the strings and the other characters become mere puppets in his show.
‘For over two hours, Krzysztof Pastor offers his audience a beautiful balance between serenity and theatricality ’
