TUTU MUCH: AN EDUCATION DANCE PROJECT ‘How do those dancers remember all those pieces?? And isn’t another one added each year?? Phew, just remembering one piece was difficult enough!’
Tutu Much offers a foretaste, a sample, but it is also an initial introduction to the Dutch National Ballet. Designed for secondary school pupils, especially those in their first year, the project focuses on the making of a performance and everything that goes into it. Tutu Much provides a fascinating first introduction to the Dutch National Ballet’s repertoire.
In this project, developed by the Dutch National Ballet Education Department in collaboration with dance teachers from Projects Unlimited, each group creates its own choreography. They take their inspiration for the dances they create from existing classics, including Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, La Bayadère, Coppélia, and Carmen; but they also draw on more contemporary based works such as Kurt Weill (Krzysztof Pastor), 5 Tangos (Hans van Manen) and Who Cares (George Balanchine), thereby reflecting the Dutch National Ballet’s repertoire or the work of Company choreographers.
The project Tutu Much takes some 120 pupils and divides them up into eight groups of 15 pupils. Supervised by staff of the Amsterdam Muziektheater Education Department, the pupils work on the dances during the day. They also make the costumes, a programme and the posters. In the evening there is first a dress rehearsal (19.00 to 20.00) followed by curtain-up on the ‘real’ performance for parents, family and interested members of the public at 20.00!
Tutu Much took place at Vossius College in Amsterdam on 5 and 6 October and at Vitus College in Hilversum on Thursday 15 October. It was repeated on Tuesday 17 November at the Calvijn College Groene Hart at Barendrecht. And on Thursday 21 January Tutu Much is given again by some 170 pupils at the Kennemer Lyceum in Haarlem.
