On Monday 9 November Han Ebbelaar was made a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion in recognition of his services to the development of Dutch Dance. The ceremony took place during the 2009 Ballet Gala at the Amsterdam Music Theatre. Former dancer with the Dutch National Ballet, Han Ebbelaar founded the Dansersfonds ‘79 together with his wife Alexandra Radius.

At the Amsterdam Music Theatre that evening, highlights from classical and contemporary choreography were showcased by stars from the Dutch and international dance world. The Gala celebrated the repertoire of the Dutch National Ballet and the Company performed the pas de deux from Christopher Wheeldon’s Tryst and Balanchine’s Stravinsky Violin Concerto.

The proceeds of the evening went to the Dansersfonds ’79, founded by former ballet stars Alexandra Radius and Han Ebbelaar. The Foundation supports ballet and dance in general, and young dancers in particular.
