The Dutch National Ballet aims to present at least one new full-length production each season. This season, it is Sylvia, a poignant ballet by John Neumeier, the American who has been directing the German Hamburg Ballett since 1973.
Neumeier is known for his great erudition and passion, and for his works that are often based on literary sources and psychological themes. He is one of the last great ‘story-tellers’ of classical ballet, and this partly why an increasing number of ballet companies are showing an interest in his work.

He created Sylvia in 1997 at the invitation of the Paris Opera, where the production has since been presented on a regular basis. The ballet is a contemporary adaptation of Sylvia, ou la nymphe de Diana by Louis Mérante, which was premiered in Paris at the Palais Garnier (just like Neumeier’s version) in 1876. In his choreography, Neumeier focused on the main outlines of the original ballet libretto, which was a very complicated one. Essentially, the piece revolves around the heart-rending fact that even a perfect love can go wrong and sometimes that love can never be rekindled, no matter how hard the lovers try.
The Greek artist Yannis Kokkos created the wonderful designs for the ballet. The scenery is like an abstract work of art, painted in primary colours.
